o ano do linux nos desktops
ok, ja sei que esta frase está batida.. ja todos a ouvimos centenas de vezes talvez nos ultimos 5 anos. Mas a verdade é, parece-me que é desta! Quando digo “ano”, nao quero ser tao minucioso ao ponto de dizer que será até ao fim de 2006… mas que está perto, está!
Tenho dado bastante atenção à nova versão do Ubuntu (Dapper Drake), que foi adiado agora em 6 semanas para dar um polishing extra. Está realmente excelente! Que o linux já batia o windows em muita coisa(e nao estou a falar em termos de servidores) já muita gente sabe… agora começa-se a ver que até o OS X começa a ficar para trás. Basta darem uma olhada no Xgl e em todas as modernices que andam a passar pelos servidores gráficos (compositing e afins…).
O que é que falta? O mesmo de sempre… drivers dos fabricantes de hardware, e codecs em condiçoes! Quando é que podemos instalar e começar logo a ver dvds/wmv/mov etc..?

Fluendo announces free MP3 audio decoding for GNU/Linux and Unix
Fluendo released today their mp3 decoding GStreamer plug-in for the GNU/Linux and Unix operating systems free of cost.
In order to improve the GNU/Linux and Unix multimedia experience Fluendo announced today the immediate availability of their MP3 plug-in for the GStreamer multimedia framework. The MP3 decoder is available free of charge both for individual end users and GNU/Linux and Unix distribution makers.
In addition to making their licensed binary plug-in available to the public Fluendo also released the source code to this MP3 plug-in under the very permissive MIT license allowing all kind of developers and companies access to it.
The GStreamer plug-in will allow playback of the popular MP3 format using many popular open source applications like the Banshee music player and Totem media player. While various MP3 playback solutions already are available this one will allow MP3 working out of the box with any distribution entering into our distribution agreement.

Embora ja seja um utilizador do Ubuntu há imenso tempo (comecei a usar e a primeira release ainda nem tinha saido), só agora resolvi investigar como vai a comunidade portuguesa.

gnome vs kde
O jimmac, escreveu recentemente sobre a polémica Gnome vs Kde lançada pelo Linus. Se há imagens que valem por mil palavras, esta é uma delas
